Our correspondent, Brooke Wentz, found herself in Bamako in the midst of the violent political <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/1991/03/27/world/mali-s-dictator-is-overthrown-in-coup.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">coup d’etat that felled President Moussa Traore after 23 years in power.</a></p>
