Scholar: Michael Veal
Musician and scholar Michael E. Veal is Professor of Ethnomusicology in the Departments of Music and African-American Studies at Yale University. He is the author of<a href="http://http://www.amazon.com/Fela-Life-Times-African-Musical/dp/1566397650" target="_blank"><em> Fela: The Life & Times of an African Musical Icon</em> (Temple University Press, 2000) </a>and the award-winning <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Dub-Soundscapes-Shattered-Jamaican-Culture/dp/0819565725" target="_blank"><em>Dub: Soundscapes and Shattered Songs in Jamaican Reggae</em></a> (Wesleyan University Press, 2007). His forthcoming books include <em>Technotopia 1969: Miles Davis at the Crossroads</em> and <em>Tony Allen: Master Drummer of Afrobeat</em>. Professor Veal is also a musician. He leads Michael Veal & Aqua Ife - an Afrobeat-jazz big band in which he plays electric bass - and Michael Veal’s Armillary Sphere, a free-jazz quintet in which he plays soprano saxophone. Professor Veal currently resides in New York City.
