Bounce Into the Weekend with Yasser Tejeda's “Nuestra Raices”

Some genres can be reinvented and re-seasoned endlessly. Every week we hear from bands that are expanding the limits of Afrobeat, or adding regional character to a broadly defined “funk.” Yasser Tejeda and Palotre's new single takes these staples and mixes in Afro-Dominican palo percussion to create the catchy new single, “Nuestra Raices.”

How's it sound? Afrobeat horns beat against the percussion section's flowing current. Despite the size, the large percussion ensemble starts and stops as nimbly as any soloist. It's a lock-step groove and a bouncy chorus, which is to say, it's scratching that Friday itch.

We're eager to hear the band's new album in full, when Kijombo drops on Oct. 11. Yasser and band perform at Rockwood Music Hall in Manhattan next Thurs., Aug. 29, so we can get a little preview then.
