Fela and Sade Adu Get the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Nod

Well, it looks like Burna Boy is getting his wish. And he's not alone. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame hasn't quite known what to do with African pop music, but it's catching up. On the heels of his Grammy recognition for lifetime achievement, and more than a decade after the Broadway show, Fela!, it was finally time.

‘’Fela Kuti was a revolutionary voice who spoke out against injustice through his innovative music – provoking political change while infusing jazz, West African, and soul music to pioneer the Afrobeat genre,’’ Rock and Roll stated on their website

With his uncompromising bravado and brilliant Afro-reimagining of funk, Fela seems an obvious choice, particularly when there are Afrobeat bands in Fela's image in nearly every city on earth. Nevertheless, better late then never.

And while they were thinking of Nigeria, the R&RHoF thought it was time to recognize Sade Adu as well.

’Sade blended jazz, soul, and R&B into a sound entirely their own, creating music so timeless and deeply personal that it has resonated with listeners across four decades.’’ Rock and Roll stated on their website

Further expanding stylistic and geographical reach, this year's indictees also include Phil Collins, Iron Maiden, Oasis, Wu-Tang Clan, Queen Latifah and Celia Cruz.

The word is out, but the official ceremony takes place November 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The event will be broadcast on ABC and streamed on Disney+ in December.
