Plenty Bacchanal: Carnival in Flux

Panorama 10 0039
<p>Trinidadians call their annual Carnival "the greatest show on earth," and with good reason. The Carnival season brims over with art and music: steelpan, calypso, soca and extravagant masquerade costumes. In this program, we take a look at how these Carnival arts are kept alive in today's Trinidad. At this moment in time, Carnival is in flux. Commercialism is in tension with creativity; global outlooks conflict with local identity. But, through it all, life goes on and excellent music flows. Open your ears to some life-giving music and conversations about Trinidad and its brilliant bacchanal.&nbsp;</p> <p>Produced by Sebastian Bouknight</p> <p><br></p> <p>Tracklist:&nbsp;</p> <table> <tbody><tr> <td>0:00</td><td><br></td><td>Laventille Rhythm Section </td><td>Sweet Fuh Days</td></tr><tr><td>0:55 </td><td><br></td><td>Patrice Roberts </td><td>Sweet Fuh Days </td></tr> <tr> <td>1:31 </td><td><br></td><td>David Rudder </td><td>Welcome To Trinidad </td></tr> <tr> <td>5:01 </td><td><br></td><td>Voice </td><td>Year For Love </td></tr> <tr> <td>6:43 </td><td><br></td><td>Kerwin Du Bois and Kes </td><td>Feteland </td></tr> <tr> <td>7:53 </td><td><br></td><td>Bunji Garlin </td><td>Vintage Garlin </td></tr> <tr> <td>10:24 </td><td><br></td><td>Kes </td><td>Hello </td></tr> <tr> <td>11:20 </td><td><br></td><td>Turner, Machel Montano and Flavour </td><td>She Bad (Remix) </td></tr> <tr> <td>13:50 </td><td><br></td><td>Fay Ann Lyons and Stonebwoy </td><td>Carnival </td></tr> <tr> <td>14:33 </td><td><br></td><td>Machel Montano and Superblue </td><td>Soca Kingdom </td></tr> <tr> <td>15:29 </td><td><br></td><td>Nine Mind/Lenky Production </td><td>Upendo Riddim&nbsp; </td></tr> <tr> <td>16:22 </td><td><br></td><td>Turner </td><td>Champions </td></tr> <tr> <td>17:34 </td><td><br></td><td>Julian Whiterose </td><td>Iron Duke In The Land </td></tr> <tr> <td>20:39 </td><td><br></td><td>Eunice Peters </td><td>Failure Is Not An Option </td></tr> <tr> <td>21:50 </td><td><br></td><td>Singing Sandra </td><td>Power in Song </td></tr> <tr> <td>24:04 </td><td><br></td><td>Tigress </td><td>Rowley to Rowley </td></tr> <tr> <td>25:50 </td><td><br></td><td>Brother Resistance </td><td>Cyar Take That </td></tr> <tr> <td>27:39 </td><td><br></td><td>Helon Francis </td><td>Change </td></tr> <tr> <td>30:11 </td><td><br></td><td>Attila the Hun </td><td>History of Carnival </td></tr> <tr> <td>30:32 </td><td><br></td><td>Invaders Steel Orchestra </td><td>Inside the Festival </td></tr> <tr> <td>35:33 </td><td><br></td><td>Invaders Steel Orchestra </td><td>Inside the Festival </td></tr> <tr> <td>39:59 </td><td><br></td><td>Phase II Pan Groove </td><td>Hello </td></tr> <tr> <td>46:26<br></td><td><br></td><td>Renegades Steel Orchestra<br></td><td>Year For Love</td></tr><tr><td>52:59<br></td><td><br></td><td>Dev</td><td>Is Jam</td></tr> <tr> <td>53:54<br></td><td><br></td><td>Gasparillo Tamboo Bamboo</td><td>Showtime</td></tr><tr><td>54:35<br></td><td><br></td><td>Machel Montano</td><td>Showtime</td></tr><tr><td>55:35<br></td><td><br></td><td>Machel Montano and Superblue</td><td>Soca Kingdom</td></tr> <tr> <td>57:14</td><td><br></td><td>Bunji Garlin&nbsp;</td><td>Big Bad Soca</td></tr> <tr> <td><br></td><td><br></td><td><br></td><td><br></td></tr></tbody></table>

Soundin' Like Weself: The Trinidadian Rapso Tradition

Here we encounter the musical and philosophical movement called rapso–an infectiously danceable rhythmic oration style that comes with a philosophy championing a Trinidadian identity in the face of a colonial history and a globalized present.
